China market strategy and implementation

Hindawi Ltd retained Osmanthus Consutling on a full-time basis for nine months to conduct a thorough China market landscape and risk analysis. This was used to make the case for Hindawi's expansion into the China market. After this was approved by senior management, Osmanthus then supported Hindawi is establishing a commercial presence in China, including development of a marketing plan, establishing a Wholly-Owned Foreign Enterprise, staff hiring and developing relationships with potential partners and key opinion leaders. Hindawi's China activity was cited as a key reason for its acquisition by Wiley in early 2021.

China business expansion strategy and implementation roadmap

Osmanthus has developed strategies to support multiple STM publisher clients in the expansion of their commercial and editorial operations in China. Deliverables included market and risk analyses, comprehensive expansion strategies including staffing guidance, budgeting and scenario planning and board presentations. In all cases the China plans received board approval and are currently being implemented.

Acting senior management

Osmanthus Managing Director Nicko Goncharoff is currently serving as Acting Country Manager for AIP Publishing, overseeing the implementation of the organisation's China growth strategy. The role includes direct management of staff, development of sales and marketing plans, hiring, relationship and partner management, academic outreach and engagement and board reporting and presentation.

Product development

A world leading STM publisher has retained Osmanthus Consulting to support them in developing a new product aimed at the academic and commercial research market. Work includes defining the product value proposition, obtaining feedback on MVP use cases and capabilities, defining and refining pricing and establishing a network of development partners and early adopter clients.

Market and Risk Analysis

An international provider of publishing services retained Osmanthus to better understand the China market and what type of investment and risk mitigation it should be taking on behalf of itself and its clients. Osmanthus delivered a comprehensive review of the market, including a library of market research briefs and data, as well as in-depth risk modelling scenarios spanning a range of potential revenue impacts from recent changes in Chinese research policies and the country's STM publishing market.
